In recent years American culture has experienced a seismic shift among attitudes toward sexuality and gender. These evolving views are a source of confusion for many, and a challenge to the Church. They are also an incredible opportunity.
Beneath discussions about sexual ethics and gender identity lay deeper questions about what it means to be human—to be embodied, experience desires, long for relational fulfillment. When we take our cultural preoccupation with sexuality seriously, we are drawn into a vital conversation about human identity and fulfillment, matters at the heart of the Gospel.
On Friday and Saturday, September 22-23, the Falls Church Anglican will host a seminar called, Being Human: Gender, Sexuality and Fulfillment, that explores the heart of the gospel in relation to these topics. Speakers John Yates III and Sam Ferguson will consider how the biblical view of our humanity bears upon modern understandings of sexuality and gender, addressing questions such as: How does the biblical story of creation, fall and redemption help us understand our experiences and identity? How does Scripture’s teaching on the creation of humankind inform our understanding of being male or female? How does the Gospel’s vision of human fulfillment square with the Bible’s sexual ethics? How is the Gospel good news, even amidst our sexual brokenness?
John and Sam are both students of Scripture as well as pastors. They share not only from prayerful study, but also from walking alongside people they love; they desire for the church increased clarity, and also deeper compassion. They are convinced that the Bible’s vision of being human is more compelling than any other, and that the Gospel’s answers to our longings are the most satisfying of all.
