Israel refuses to wait for Moses to come down from Sinai. They fashion a Golden Calf, a god like the surrounding nations, call it Yahweh their deliverer and worship it. We too fashion God in our image, assuming he must fit our culture’s views, but in doing so we reject the true God and worship no God at all.
The Lord instructs Israel to build a Tabernacle–that worship of God would be at the center of their life and that He might dwell with his people. God dwelling with us is a theme running through Redemptive History and calling God’s people out into mission.
Matt Hemsley preaching on our misconceptions of the Old Testament Law that God gave as a gift to Israel, offering them a true identity, grace and freedom–that pointed ahead to all the Jesus accomplished for us in his life and death.
Plus God in Life: Three students, Maddie, Ellie and Luke, share how the 2019 Chile Mission Trip impacted their faith. (Fast forward to minute 38 to hear student testimonies).
Exodus 17
As Israel is again in need (water) in the wilderness, they complain and accuse, God again provides. And then as they enter battle, the Lord calls them to trust him and fight, but not alone, and he will deliver them.
ALSO included after sermon – God in Life message from Chile Mission Team Student, Logan on how the trip impacted his faith. Skip ahead to Minute 35 to listen.
When Israel grumbles in the wilderness, the Lord responds with mercy, providing manna and inviting Israel (and all of us) into a daily relationship of trusting and knowing him as their God.
Exodus 14
With the Red Sea in front, the Wilderness around them and the Egyptian Army baring down from behind, Israel cries out in fear–we would rather stay as slaves than die in Egypt. The fear mind can only see death. But God says, stand firm, be silent, I will fight for you. In Christ, we have no reason to fear but can live out of our Gospel Identity and into our Kingdom calling with freedom and joy in all circumstances.
Exodus 12
On the night of the Passover the LORD delivered Israel out of Egypt by bringing a final plague of death to all firstborn sons in the land but providing a way out under the blood of a sacrificed lamb. This dramatic act of redemption pointed to the greater act of deliverance in Jesus Christ, the true Passover Lamb.
Through the Plagues, God brings Judgment on Egypt and her gods and reveals himself as the true Lord of creation. But Pharaoh is still hard-hearted, seeking his own Glory and unwilling to let the Hebrew people go to serve Yahweh.
Exodus 6
Moses fails his first test of obeying God as he enters the courts of Pharaoh to speak to him. He is moving through the Biblical process of Orientation to Disorientation so he could be Reoriented for God’s purposes. God does the same with Israel and will do so in each of us throughout our lives.
Exodus 3-4
Unfortunately, the first minutes of Dean Miller’s message was not recorded.
Exodus 1-2
The sermon begins the Summer of Discernment for Christ Church Vienna–using Exodus and Israel’s Journey to become God’s People as the guide.
Israel is God’s chosen people, but they have been enslaved by Egypt. Then, brave midwives and a mom defy the Pharaoh–Moses, the deliver is born. But at each turn, the question is will they, will he, will we fear and follow God or man? How can we, and Moses, live into our Kingdom Identity?
